In Jeremiah 34, the nation of Judah responded to God's call and repented- temporarily. The U.S. has done much the same with regard to 9/11.

America showed signs of repentance in the immediate aftermath of 9/11… but not for long. Soon thereafter, the gay-marriage debate burst on the scene, and as we’ve seen over the following years, there’s been a continual assault on Christian liberty and our freedoms of speech. God will turn and heal our land, but not until we’ve demonstrated a genuine repentance- the kind of repentance only God’s Spirit can bring about.

The God We Seek- Both Holy and Good

In Jeremiah 32 the prophet faced the dilemna of hoping in God's goodness, while facing God's just judgment. Jeremiah's doubts were met by a direct challenge from the Lord.

We often face the dilemna, in our personal lives as well as in praying for the nation, of responding to God’s grace while recognizing His judgment. Jeremiah laid out HIs perplexity before the Lord, and the Lord assured Him that His goodness and His promises would be brought to pass. We too can be strengthened in times of trouble and confusion as we embrace God’s wisdom and power thru His word to His faltering prophet:

“Is there anything to hard for Me?” Jeremiah 32:27

The New Covenant- Our Salvation and Today’s Prayer

Jeremiah 31 is very clear: the New Covenant Jesus spoke of is primarily intended for- and ultimately will be made with- Israel.

Jeremiah 31:31-37 specifically designates the Lord and “the house of Israel… and Judah” as the parties to the New Covenant. In God’s wisdom, grace, and foresight, upon the Jews national rejection of Christ, He offered to the Gentile world some of the blessings and merits of the New Covenant. The covenant’s basis remains His blood, and features forgiveness and regeneration. Additionally, God has blessed the church in some ways beyond what was promised to Israel, namely (as Paul states) the “unsearchable riches of Christ.”

Behold the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name:
If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.
Thus saith the LORD; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD.
